Furniture owners blame swollen wood for a wobbly joint every monsoon. In the case of furniture pieces built with SS screws, it is not the wood which is responsible for the loosening of joints. Stainless steel forms a passive chromium oxide layer on its surface the moment it is manufactured, and that layer does not flake or thicken the way surface rust on mild steel does. Water sits below and drains off completely.
The thread crest stays close to its original profile even after two or three monsoons, so the same clamping force from installation day is mostly still there when you check the joint years later. Mild steel needs a protective coating to get close to that. Scratch that coating during installation, which happens often, and the bare steel underneath meets the same moisture that starts the oxidation cycle already described.
